MathCounts is a competition for 6th through 8th grade students, where they study how to solve various types of mathematical problems and join other schools in the region for a day of competitions.

MathCounts consists of four levels of competition: School, Regional, State and National.  During each competition there are three rounds, sprint, target and team.  In the sprint round students are asked to answer 30 questions in 40 minutes without the aid of a calculator.  The target round consists of 4 sets of 2 questions.  Students are given 6 minutes to answer two questions at a time with the aid of a calculator.  The next round is a team round where 4 student work together to solve 10 problems in 20 minutes.  At the regional, state and national competition there is also a countdown round where the top students are paired against each other and the clock to solve problems.

MathCounts at Banner County Schools will be starting in October.  Any student in 6th through 8th grade who would like to participate can join practices starting on Monday, October 15 from 3:30 until 5:00 in Mrs. Olsen’s room.  The students will have a 10 minutes break, so parents/guardians will be asked to help supply some snacks for the students.

The MathCounts students must stay academically eligible and be willing to work hard to improve their math skills.  The practice times will be placed on the monthly calendar as well as the web site as a reminder.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Olsen at the school (436-5262 ext 329) if you have any further questions.
