After 32 years in education, Mr. Steer is retiring in May 2026. Throughout Mr. Steer's teaching career, he has had many roles: principal-teacher, coach, athletic director, and student group sponsor. Mr.Steer taught in Alaska and retired after twenty years. He then started teaching again in Nebraska and retired one more time. Although he had retired from all of these roles twice before, former Superintendent Dr. Evelyn Browne persuaded Mr. Steer to come back to education for a third time, as a kindergarten teacher.
Mr. Steer has enjoyed his time at Banner County Schools. He will miss many things about this school. He has appreciated the very supportive parents at Banner County, and the relationships he developed with his students. He also appreciates the community feeling in Banner County, stating, “The overall feeling of family is the thing I'm going to miss the most.”
According to Mr. Steer, the thing that impacted him the most while he worked here was the small community. “Parents really do care about kids around here. I've taught in schools much larger than this one, and in schools of this size, but people treat one another so well around here. The other big impact is being able to teach kids individually and in smaller groups than in a bigger school.”
Following retirement, Mr. Steer is excited to spend time with his grandchildren, continue his landscaping business, and start to put together a storage business with his wife. Banner County Schools, its students, parents, and staff are all grateful for Mr. Steer’s service to our community.
