As this school year comes to an end, Mrs. Steer will be ending her journey of teaching after 40 years of service. She is retiring with a legacy that has touched many students and families. She began teaching in Kalskag, Alaska, where she taught for 20 years, followed by another 20 years in Banner County. Over the course of her career, she has taught a variety of classes: 7th-8th grade language arts, Title 1, special education, basic journalism, and 7th grade study skills.
In addition to her teaching duties, she was also the spelling bee coordinator, and a long-term substitute for high school science in Bridgeport. One of Mrs. Steer’s favorite memories was walking into her classroom on the very first day and instantly feeling at home. Her passion for teaching was inspired back in fifth grade, when her principal placed her next to a disabled student, trusting her kindness. That experience opened her eyes to how others treated students with challenges, and it deeply impacted her. She never forgot that lesson, or Jackie, the student who helped shape her future. It was that moment that led her to pursue a career in education and special education, driven by a desire to make a difference.
As she retires, Mrs. Steer extends her thanks to all the parents who trusted her to educate their children. As she reflected on her career, she stated, “What I will miss most about teaching is watching my students' eyes light up when they finally under stand what they’ve been working on.” Her compassion, dedication, and commitment to her students will not be forgotten and we wish her a very happy retirement.
